For most people, having things stolen feels like a wrong act. Robbie Pruitt said that he got mad when he found out someone took his mountain bike. But soon his feelings changed. He began to feel sorry for those who couldn't even afford a bike.
For Pruitt, a big fan of biking, the first thing to do was to buy a new one. But when he went bike shopping, he found many bikes were far too expensive. Moreover, many people couldn't find right places to have their bikes repaired.
With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it on the community website. He offered to fix bikes for free for anyone who needed it. He also asked for unwanted bikes, which he would repair—again for free.
As soon as the plan was posted, Pruitt received thirty used bicycles. Then came more than 500 messages for detailed information. By the end of the year, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 for donation or to be returned to their owners. Pruitt tries to give his donations to families that can't afford bikes.
Pruitt doesn't just provide bikes—he also helps kids in his neighbourhood learn how to fix their own bikes. The kids have got a sense of achievement. "It's a really great experience for kids," said a neighbour. "Pruitt is certainly providing a service but it's not just the bikes. It's the relationships in the community. It's the influence he can make on people."
