41 In order to save dialects, the Ministry of Education(教育部) set up the National Language Resource(资源) Protection Project a few years ago.
The ministry keeps doing surveys and protecting China's language resources.
42 Now China has owned the largest online language resource library in the world. Tens of thousands of videos and audio clips(音频片段) are provided, and people can learn dialects by watching or listening to them.
43 According to British linguist(语言学家) Harold Palmer, the dialect is the key to local culture, as language faithfully(忠诚地) shows the history and beliefs of an area.
Scholar(学者) Zhang Hongming expressed his worries about the disappearing(消失) dialects. "In the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand the dialect but hardly speak it.
44 If this continues, the dialect might disappear in the future," he said.
So how did China make this big library?
45 More than 350 universities and research organizations took part in the project, along with over 4,500 experts and more than 9,000 dialect speakers.
The project is now in its second part. This includes creating digital(数字化的) tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.
