Twenty-two-year-old Wang Chuyan, a Chinese American vlogger(视频博主) in Seattle, the United States, is riding a new trend(潮流): mixing and matching modern clothes with ancient(古代的) Han Chinese dress, or hanfu. It has a history of more than 4,000 years in China.
Wang was born and grew up in the US, but her mother is Chinese and started sharing with her daughter stories about ancient China when she was very young. She now has over 628,900 fans. She has also attracted many fans on Xiaohongshu and Bilibili. "I love hanfu and I love sharing it with the world, so I make videos for people to learn about this ancient type of dress," Wang told Beijing Review.
Nowadays, more and more Chinese young people like to wear hanfu when they go out. And that's what Wang does. "I often go out in hanfu with my friends and we'll walk around Seattle, showing off our beautiful clothing. I love it when people praise my clothes and I will tell them about the history behind it. I'm surprised that so many people like it," she said.
There are a few reasons why hanfu is becoming so popular. Some Chinese young people are really proud of their ancient culture and history. Wearing hanfu is a way to connect with the past. Some like it because it looks so pretty. Others are just trying to follow the trend to wear hanfu.
However, not everyone knows hanfu. Once when Wang Chuyan was wearing hanfu on the street, a lady came up to her and said, "Oh, your kimono(和服) is so beautiful." She said, "Lady, this is not kimono from Japan. It's hanfu, from China!" It was kind of frustrating, but also made her realize that we need to do more to promote(推广) hanfu.
