)5. —Did you hear the shouts
people nearby?
—Yes. When I arrived there, I found Jim's house
fire.

A.from; in
B.at; on
C.from; on
D.at; in
C 【点拨】hear the shouts from people nearby听到附近人的叫喊声;on fire着火。

Earthquakes usually come without warning. What should you do if this happens to you? An earthquake is 1 (danger), but there are still things you can do to protect 2 (you).
Stay calm as the earth begins to shake. Your survival chances in an earthquake will increase if you can keep calm. 3 (stay) calm is not easy, but it can save your life.
If you are inside when an earthquake starts, get under a table or a bed. You need to have something strong around you to protect you from 4 (fall) objects. Do not stand near walls or windows and stay out 5 the kitchen. The kitchen is dangerous because of many glass objects.
If you are outside, get to 6 open area as fast as you can. Stay away from buildings and trees. If you are in a car, 7 (pull) over to a place where there are no trees or tall buildings and stay in the car. If you are close to the sea, try 8 (get) as far away from the water as possible. Earthquakes can cause huge waves that can harm the people nearby.
When the earthquake is over, there is still plenty of danger. For example, fires often come with an earthquake. If you see a fire, 9 (quick) move outdoors to an open area.
Always remember to hope 10 the best but prepare for the worst.

5. 此处是固定搭配stay out of,意为“远离……”,符合语境,故填of。
8. 此处是固定搭配try to do sth.,意为“尽力做某事”,符合“尽量远离水域”的语境,故填to get。
1. dangerous 2. yourself 3. Staying 4. falling 5. of
6. an 7. pull 8. to get 9. quickly 10. for

Think back to a time in your life when you tried something new.
When I was a teenager, I volunteered to pass out water in a local race. I was so excited to see all the different runners who passed by and quickly took a cup of water. Some ran past, some walked past and a few wheeled past.
I saw so many kinds of people doing it. I thought maybe I could do it too! The next year I decided to run for the race, but I had little running practice. I just wanted to finish.
On the day of the race, it was terribly hot. After running for about 5 km, I was thinking, “I must be crazy. Why did I do this? What was I thinking?” And at one moment, I said to myself, “I will never do this again!”
That first 10 km race was quite an experience. I jogged, I walked, and I jogged and walked. At times, I didn’t know if I could finish. Near the end, a 70-year-old man ran past me, very fast, and I felt a little embarrassed(尴尬的) that I was more than 50 years younger than him, and I couldn’t even keep up with him. But then I realized something. He was running his race and I was running mine. How often in life do we compare ourselves to others when we really shouldn’t? I decided that I would not give up, and one day I would be one of those 70-year-olds who were still running.
As I crossed the finishing line, I was so proud of myself. I didn’t regret(后悔) having such an experience.

(

)2. How did the writer’s feeling change during the race?
①He decided to keep on running.
②He felt very proud of himself.
③He was kind of embarrassed.
④He regretted joining in the race.
A. ①→②→③→④
B. ②→③→④→①
C. ③→①→④→②
D. ④→③→①→②
(
C
)3. What did the writer try to tell us?
A. We should volunteer as teenagers.
B. We should cheer up for old people.
C. We should run our own race in life.
D. We should try our best to be No. 1.
B 【点拨】根据第一段和第三段中“I saw so many kinds of people doing it. I thought maybe I could do it too!”
2. D 【点拨】根据第四段中“I must be crazy. Why did I do this? What was I thinking?”可知,作者后悔参加跑步比赛;根据第五段中“Near the end, a 70-year-old man ran past me, very fast, and I felt a little embarrassed(尴尬的)”可知,看到70岁的老人超过自己,作者感到有点儿尴尬;根据第五段中“I decided that I would not give up”可知,作者决定继续跑步;根据最后一段中“As I crossed the finishing line, I was so proud of myself.”
1. 定位原文首段“Think back to a time in your life when you tried something new”,以及第三段“I saw so many kinds of people doing it. I thought maybe I could do it too! The next year I decided to run for the race, but I had little running practice”,可知作者几乎没有跑步训练经验,只是想要尝试跑步这件新事。
