Tanghulu is a traditional snack from Northern China. People of all ages love it, especially kids.
It is usually made of haws(山楂), which are full of vitamin C. About 800 years ago, one of the emperor's wives was sick and had a poor appetite. The doctor told her to eat 5-10 boiled haws with sugar before dinner. She felt better after two weeks. People heard about it and started making it too. They put haws on sticks, dipped them into hot syrup(糖浆), and cooled them down. The syrup made a hard and sweet shell around haws, like wearing a sugar jacket.
