This is a weekend. Roy watches his father raise a knife and bring it down at the centre point of a pizza. The pizza is sliced in two. Roy isn't sure this is helping him with his Maths homework, but his dad insists(坚持).
“How many pieces do I have now, Roy?” Dad asks. “Two,” says Roy. “Right. So what do we call each piece?” “A half,” answers Roy. Dad nods, raises the knife again and slices each half in half again. “Half of a half makes what?” Roy thinks for a while. “Each one is a quarter, right?” Dad smiles. “But how about a half of a quarter?” “I don't know,” says Roy. “Sure you do. Think about this. We have a half. A half is 1 over 2. Then we have a quarter. It is 1 over 4. If the bottom number(底数) doubles, what would it be?” Roy starts to think. The bottom number, the denominator(分母) of the fractions(分数), goes from 1 to 2 to 4. It is doubling(加倍). “Each piece is an eighth, 1 over 8.” Dad smiles and then cuts each eighth in half. “Now then, what is half of an eighth?” “Double eight is sixteen, so it's a sixteenth.” Roy answers confidently(自信地). “Exactly. You get fractions now. Let's eat the pizza!” Dad says.
