You have probably seen many cartoons during your life. Some of these cartoons appear in newspapers and others are in books. Others are seen in full-length movies and TV shows. Cartoons are very popular with people but are they works of art?
Works of art are made by artists for a certain purpose. Usually, works of art are made by people to illustrate an idea or show part of a story. You can probably think of many famous works of art, like Mona Lisa or David. These works of art took a long time to create. The people who made them wanted to show an important idea about the subject of their art. When people think of works of art, they usually think of paintings or sculptures that are known to even people who know little about art. Year after year, people come to look at the strange smile of Mona Lisa. The sculpture David is similar—a lot of people know the story of how David fought a giant. The sculpture shows David as a hero. Since most of us wish we were heroes, David interests us no matter who we are.
Cartoons can be seen in the same way, since many people who draw cartoons go to art school and study how to create pictures and stories. They think carefully about what ideas or stories they want to show with their work. Cartoons have an
advantage over the works of art you see in museums too. People need to travel to museums to see famous works of art, but a cartoon is as near as the newspaper or the internet. Cartoons talk about ideas that are important to people in a simple and easy-to-understand way. Most people do not need to stare at a cartoon for a long time to understand its meaning.
However, not everyone agrees with the idea that cartoons are art. For example, some cartoons tend to deal with very recent issues, like political（政治的）cartoons that appear in newspapers. They show an important news item of the day. However, in a few years, the people who look at the cartoons may not know anything about that news item. This means that they will not understand what the cartoon is about. Additionally, some people argue that cartoons take less time to make than other works of art, so they are not true pieces of art.
