“Do you really have no place to go?”
Jan looks up and shakes her head.
“Then come with me. You can stay at my house tonight.”
Jan gets up and follows Tom without saying any word!
Jan looks up at the night sky. It’s clear and there are thousands of stars shining above her.
“How strange!” she says. “Where are the aeroplanes(飞机)?” “Aeroplanes?” Tom looks surprised. “Yes. The planes landing and taking off at the airport.” “What airport?” “Apsworth, of course.”
Jan can see that Tom doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She knows she’s in Port Prime but everything looks different. Maybe she’s in the future. “That’s it!” she thinks. “This is the future.”
She looks around her and thinks: “If this is the future, it’s very different from the future in my dream.” “There aren’t any tall buildings. There aren’t thousands of people and lots of different colours. And there aren’t any taxis flying in the sky. Maybe there was a war. The war destroyed the airport and my home.” She looks at Tom.
“Don’t laugh at me, Tom. Do you promise(保证)?”
“I promise.”
“I think I’m in the future.”
Tom laughs. “I’m sorry. So you think you’re in the future.”
“Yes. But everything’s different. Was there a war?”
“Yes, there was a war...but it was a long time ago.”
“I think my house disappeared in the war.”
Five minutes later they arrive outside Tom’s house.
They walk up to the house and Tom opens the front door. Jan notices that the front door isn’t locked.
As they walk into the front hall, a voice calls out from the front room. “Tom? Is that you?” “Yes, Dad,” Tom replies.
