On my birthday, my grandma gave me a white money box and a set of crayons. “This is for you,” she said with a warm smile. I spent the next hour carefully painting it with bright colours and nice designs. When I finished, she put a two-dollar coin into it. “Let this be the start of your savings,” she told me.
Then, she told me a story about when she was a little girl.
One sunny day, she went to a fair(集市) with her dad. The air was full of sounds and smells—there was music, laughing, and the sweet smell of candy. Her father gave her a dollar. He said kindly, “You can buy some candy to eat now, or you can buy one of those baby chickens.”
He pointed to a box with many small, soft chickens. “If you choose a chicken, you will take it home. You must give it food and water and take care of it. It will grow up to be a hen. The hen will lay eggs. You can eat the eggs or sell them. Later, you may have more chickens and more eggs. One day, you could have a lot more than one dollar.”
My grandma looked at the pretty candy. It looked very good. Then she looked at the little chickens. They were moving and making soft sounds. “I will buy the baby chicken,” she said to her father.
Back home, her father helped her make a little house for the chicken. He showed her how to give it water and food. Then, he smiled kindly, took her favourite candy from his pocket, and gave it to her. So, she got to eat the candy.
Grandma looked at me kindly. “That little chicken taught me a
valuable lesson about making wise choices(选择),” she said. “And that is the story behind your money box.”
Now, every time I save a coin, I remember my grandma’s story. I understand that sometimes the best choice is the one that helps you build a better future.
