Have you wondered how your brain controls(控制) your senses, like touch and hearing? Recently, four 14-year-old students from Suzhou took part in the Brain Bee, a science event, and won the national first prize.
This event is all about the brain—its different parts, functions(功能) and more. Students in the junior group first take a written test. Then, those who do well move on to a team competition, where they make a poster.
But it’s not just about basic brain knowledge. It also challenges students to work well with others. Teams get their topics by drawing lots. They have only two hours to do research and finish their poster. “When we got the topic—the mechanisms and treatments of tinnitus(耳鸣的机制与治疗), I had no idea about it,” said student Zhang Ruolin. “It was so difficult to explain it clearly.”
After researching the topic, the team found many interesting things to draw, such as the auditory pathway(听觉通路) and some numbers to show through charts. These pictures could help people understand the topic better. “Just like we showed in our poster—when the auditory pathway is broken, the brain can rebuild itself,” Zhang said. “That’s so amazing, and it makes me want to learn more about our brain.”
This experience was more than just a competition. It opened a window to science for them. Today, a growing number of middle school students are beginning to explore the world of science through similar activities. These experiences teach them that science is not far away from them—it is found in every curious question, every team effort, and every try to make difficult knowledge clear and understandable. And the curiosity about the brain will guide them towards the frontiers(前沿) of science in the future.
