On a sunny autumn day, some teenagers and their parents were busy digging sweet potatoes on a small social(社交的) farm in Tianjin, China.
Eight families founded(创建) the farm in October 2024. These families all have children with autism(自闭症) or disabilities(残疾). Why did they start the farm? The parents wanted their children to have meaningful work to do and learn life skills at the same time.
Zhu Xijun, a founder of the farm, says, “Developing work habits is vital for the children’s self-care ability. While doing farm work, my son interacts(交流) with others using language and actions. The process is very useful and makes him happy.” Another founder, Guan Xiaoyan, has a son with autism. After her son finished middle school and stayed home, his life skills began to get

worse. Through farm work, he slowly learned the importance of teamwork and developed better habits. “He enjoys playing with others now,” says Guan happily.
The farm sometimes gets help from kind people. Liu Zhiqiang, a 60-year-old villager with a disability, often comes to help. “In the past, I was always the one getting help. Now, I can use my hands to help these children. It feels really wonderful,” he says.
In 2025, the farm collected over 15,000 kg of sweet potatoes. The teenagers were very happy to see the fruits of their hard work. “Our goal,” says Zhu, “is to grow more and help even more people in the future.”
