People want others to be their friends. At the same time, some of them don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. To have a friend, you have to be a friend. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want to be treated. Learning to be a good friend means learning these rules: be honest, be generous (慷慨的), and be understanding.
Honesty is necessary and being honest is the first step to start a good friendship. Friends must trust each other. If you don’t tell the truth, people can usually find it out. If a friend finds out that you are not honest, you may lose your friend’s trust.
To be generous, you have to learn how to share things you enjoy. You needn’t share your money or favourite clothes. You can share your ideas and feelings. By chatting about the ideas and feelings, you can make your friend know you well.
Everyone needs understanding when facing problems. If something goes wrong at school, talk about the problem with a friend. True friends will understand you and may help solve the problem. To be a friend, you must learn to listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place, and then you can understand the problem better.
