In the Northern Song Dynasty, there was a person called Chen Yaozi. He was good at archery (射箭).

One day, Chen Yaozi showed his archery skill to people. He shot an arrow (射箭). He broke a thin willow branch (柳枝). The people cheered. Chen Yaozi was very proud of his skill.

But an old man just smiled and nodded his head (点头). The old man was an oil seller. “What do you think of my skill?” Chen Yaozi asked him.

The old man said, “It’s OK, but nothing special. You are good at archery just because you practise it a lot.”

Chen Yaozi asked, “What can you do then?” The old man said nothing. He put a gourd (葫芦) on the ground, and covered its mouth with a copper coin (铜钱). There was a small hole in the middle of the coin.

The old man took a spoonful of oil, held it high and poured (倒入) the oil into the gourd. The oil went right through the hole in the coin. No drop of oil fell on the coin.

The people around shouted, “Wonderful! Wonderful!” The old man said, “This is nothing special. I’m just skilled.” Chen Yaozi smiled and sent him away.
