The Story of Nian
There is a scary monster(可怕的怪兽) named "Nian". He lives at the bottom of the sea all year round. However, he comes out on the last day of the lunar year(农历年). He eats people and animals. Everyone is very afraid of him.
One day, an old man visits a village. He tells people how to scare Nian away(吓跑). He says, "Nian is afraid of three things: red colour, fire(火), and loud noises(响声)."
So, on that special night, people put red paper on their doors. They wear red clothes. They light firecrackers(鞭炮) and beat drums(敲鼓). The village becomes very noisy and bright with the red colour.
When Nian arrives, he sees all the red and hears the loud noises. He feels terrified(害怕的) and runs back into the sea. People celebrate this victory every year. This is why we now call it "Guo Nian".
Today, we still follow these traditions(传统). We paste red couplets(对联) and fu, set off fireworks, and wear new red clothes to welcome the New Year.
