There are four famous academies in China. People call them the “Four Great Academies”（四大书院）. They have a long history and they are very important in Chinese education.
Yingtian Academy
Yingtian Academy is in Shangqiu, Henan Province, also known as Yingtianfu Academy. The buildings there are beautiful and it is good for learning. Many famous scholars(学者) studied there.
Yuelu Academy
Yuelu Academy was set up in the Song Dynasty. It is at the foot of Yuelu Mountain in Changsha, Hunan Province. The school has a long history and it is called “One-thousand-year-old Academy”.
Bailudong Academy
Bailudong Academy is about 10 kilometres south of the Wulao Peak of Lushan Mountain, Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province. It was built in the Tang Dynasty. Zhu Xi, a Confucian scholar in the Song Dynasty, rebuilt it and set the rules and purposes.
Songyang Academy
Songyang Academy is a famous academy. It is at the southern foot of Mount Songshan in Dengfeng City, Henan Province. It was called Songyang Temple at first and became Songyang Academy in 1035.
These four academies are very important in Chinese history and culture. Many great students came from them. I hope more and more people can know about these four academies and feel the beauty of Chinese culture.
