The Secret Garden is written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. She was born in 1849 in Manchester, England. When her father died suddenly, life became difficult for her family. In 1865, the family moved to Tennessee, USA. When Frances was eighteen years old, she began writing stories for ladies' magazines and soon she was making enough money for the whole family.
In 1886 she wrote her first children's story, Little Lord Fauntleroy. The book was very popular. After 1887, Frances lived in a large house with a lovely garden called Great Maytham Hall in England. This house and its garden inspired(启发) her to write The Secret Garden.
The Secret Garden was published(出版) in 1911. At the time it was not as popular as Little Lord Fauntleroy. However, today it is one of the most popular children's books.
In the story, Mary Lennox's parents die in India and she arrives at her uncle's house in England. She is ten years old, thin, angry and spoilt. She finds the secret garden. She starts to work in the garden and Dickon, a local boy, helps her. Then she finds her cousin Colin. He is ill and can't walk, but with the help of Mary, Dickon and the secret garden, he gets well.
Mary is like Frances as a child. Both of them had to move to a strange new country because of the death of their parents. Both loved reading and were imaginative.
When she wrote the book, Frances was interested in some new ideas. She believed the power of nature. Another new idea was thinking positively. People thought it made illness go away. In the story, the garden changes Mary from an angry child into a happy child, and Colin walks again when he begins to think about what is good in life.
