Finding my voice through art
When I was a kid, I dreamed of being a painter. I loved expressing my feelings through
1
and brushstrokes. But in Art class, I often felt discouraged. My paintings never seemed to
2
my classmates' works.
I remember we had a project to
3
a portrait. After we finished, we presented our paintings to the class. As I looked around, I felt
4
. "Why do their paintings look so good, but mine looks like I just started?" I thought. I was upset as I
5
my painting to the really nice ones around me.
But I still really enjoyed painting. I found
6
in painting. If I didn't like what I had put on paper, I could
7
paint over it. With each brushstroke, I felt creativity
8
inside me, helping me let go of my fears and express what inspired me.
In school, we studied famous
9
like Picasso and Van Gogh, and I never saw myself or my art in their works. The scenes they painted didn't fit my
10
. Then, everything changed when I discovered the Black artists during the Harlem Renaissance and the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat. I felt more seen. Their art
11
me to create my own art—abstract(抽象的) portraits and beautiful sunsets.
I paint when I'm moved, and I am
12
moved by what's natural—emotions, nature and other forms of art, especially creative writing. I am also very moved by pain. I talked with a famous artist Spook, and I explained this
13
to her. She told me, "Pain is energy. You have to learn how to
14
it towards something useful." This inspired me to turn my pain into my art, into my paintings.
Even if my paintings aren't
15
, it's still beautiful that I was able to create something. My paintings may not be a Basquiat, but they're mine—so I love them anyway.
