Thomas Edison was a man who became world famous for his inventions. However, he had a difficult start in life and, even when he was successful, he had to work very hard.
Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, in 1847. He was the seventh and last child—the fourth surviving—of Samuel Edison, Jr. and Nancy Elliot Edison. As a child, he was often sick and had trouble hearing. Despite his health issues, he was a curious and
bright boy. He loved to read and experiment, often spending hours in his mother’s library.
Edison had a difficult time in school because he couldn’t hear well, but he loved to learn on his own. He built a laboratory in the basement of his parents’ house when he was just 10 or 11, and started his own business selling newspapers, snacks, and candy on trains a year or two later.
In some ways, Edison is remembered as much for his attitude to achievements as for the achievements themselves. He is well known as the person who made a light bulb that worked well, but before he succeeded in 1879, he had tried over 1,000 different materials to put the electricity through in the bulb. When people asked him about failing so many times, he said, “I didn’t fail. I just found 1,000 ways that didn’t work.”
Edison’s light bulb changed the world by bringing bright light into homes and streets in a very convenient way. But he didn’t stop there. Before he died in 1931, he registered more than 1,000 inventions, including the phonograph which played music, and an early camera which was used to make the very first movies, although they were only a few minutes long.
