Galim Gaisin, a 27-year-old Canadian, always wanted to be an actor—a dream he has now realized in micro dramas (短剧). So far, he has filmed about 30 micro dramas. He never thought he would become popular in this special way.
“I really enjoy the freedom in filming micro dramas,” Gaisin said. “Directors of micro dramas are open to new ideas. They give actors space to bring their own personalities to the roles they play. Compared with traditional TV shows, micro dramas allow me to try more different characters. It is a wonderful chance for me to improve my acting skills.”
Gaisin isn’t the only foreign performer in micro dramas. The rapid development of China’s micro drama market is now attracting many foreign talents. Another perfect example is Ashlynn Judy, 25, who flew from Los Angeles to Shanghai to film them. Although she has a degree in film studies, Judy couldn’t get enough chances back home because the competition in the traditional film industry was too strong. About three months ago, Judy gave up her job and started filming micro dramas full-time. “It has been a life-changing experience for me—busy, fun and really great,” she said excitedly.
Behind this development are several key reasons. According to a report, micro dramas’ popularity is mainly because of the wide use of the internet and the busy lives of young people. Micro dramas offer a quick way to unwind after long hours of work or study.
