Qipao has a history of over 100 years. It is now a symbol of Chinese women's beauty.
The illustrator(插画师) Lu Mei loves qipao very much. She has painted women in qipao for years. In 2021, she published(出版) the book Cheongsam, which shows how the style of qipao changed in the past 100 years.
Lu Mei became interested in qipao after reading a book by the famous writer Zhang Ailing. In 2007, she drew pictures for a book by Zhang Ailing and the clothes in the book. Lu started her study on the dress.
In the late 1910s, people first wore qipao. It looked like long, wide robes(长袍) and only men wore it. By the 1930s, qipao changed. It became slimmer and had higher splits(开叉).
"Today, qipao becomes a fashion choice for women and a symbol of Chinese culture once again, but the dress is different from that in the past," Lu said. "The dress now is much more close-fitting."
Lu Mei loves qipao, but she seldom wears it in her everyday life. Lu hopes people can learn something meaningful behind qipao, not just wear it as a dress.
