Do you like eating pie? You can eat more pie on a special day—Pi Day! It's because pi has the same pronunciation(发音) as "pie".
On March 14 every year, maths and science lovers come together to celebrate Pi Day. The date matches the first three numbers of pi—3.14. In 2019, the USA made it the International Day of Mathematics. It is to celebrate the beauty and importance of maths.
Pi Day also remembers a famous Chinese scientist Zu Chongzhi. He worked out pi as being between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927. It stood as the most correct symbol of pi for over 800 years. Now students in different countries celebrate Pi Day in different ways.
Students in the USA often eat pie and throw pie at each other. It's like a big party! Also, you can buy pizza or pie at a special price of 3.14 dollars in many pizza restaurants that day. In France, some schools let students make artworks about pi. Johanna Elisabeth, a schoolgirl, once built a building about pi. She used different coloured blocks(积木) to show each number of pi, such as yellow for 2 and red for 5. In a high school, in China, students celebrate Pi Day with pi memorization competitions(比赛). "We try to remember as many numbers of pi as we can. It helps our memory(记忆) skills," said Simon.
