Tom and his parents were excited! They were in the middle of Russia's second biggest city, St Petersburg.
It was a long way from their home in Los Angeles, the USA. This city was so different. Disneyland, the Los Angeles theme park, has tall buildings and beautiful castles (城堡). Here in the Palace Square of St Petersburg, the Winter Palace is much more magnificent. The Russian emperors lived here many years ago. It has nearly 2,000 windows, 2,000 doors and many rooms and halls. It is now a world-famous art museum. There are many other palaces around this city. They are now used as offices and government (政府) buildings.
Tom and his parents were enjoying their trip and looking at so many new things. They walked down the cold streets to the next place of interest—Peter and Paul Cathedral (教堂). It is the oldest cathedral in St Petersburg. Many of the emperors of Russia were buried (埋) here. The walls of the cathedral are decorated with statues (雕像) of angles. It is very smart and beautiful. A tall bell tower rings four times a day.
It is a city with so much history that has been kept for people to see in the palaces, museums and cathedrals. Tom was happy to be in a "real-life" Disneyland type of city—with real palaces and castles. Travelling in Russia was amazing.
