An amazing map created by Wu Yunjie, a member of China's post-90s generation, has recently attracted wide attention online. Netizens expressed their amazement at the map, which clearly shows countless historic sites and cultural relics (文物) across the nation.
Wu has a deep interest in cultural relics and history. When he was in college, he would often make use of his free time to travel around the country, exploring and recording ancient sites. In 2020, he started collecting information on cultural relic protection bodies and uploaded (更新) the information to the mapping software (软件).
As some of the information was not fully
disclosed online and many historic sites in far areas couldn't be located clearly, Wu spent a lot of time on research and carrying out on-site visits.
Now, the map includes nearly 10,000 historic sites with different colours standing for different kinds: red signs show the cultural relic sites under national protection or the national-level museums, while green signs stand for the provincially-protected historic sites. A netizen posted, "I actually found the ancient tower around my house on the map!"
However, in Wu's eyes, the map is not perfect, as it only records less than two per cent of the over 760,000 immovable cultural relics noted in the country's third national survey of cultural relics.
But Wu has been working on improving it. "If possible, I'd also like to record the cultural relics that have been lost overseas (在海外). Those treasures may not be able to return to their homeland now, but the stories that they carry are what we need to see."
