Reading a good book is a wonderful journey because the reader can live in someone else's world for a while. Reading together with a partner is called buddy reading. It will make this journey even greater. During the journey, the buddies spend a lot of time reading together. This not only adds to the joy of reading, but also deepens their understanding of the books.
Although it is all right to have students join in buddy reading with the same-aged schoolmates, schools usually pair up buddies by having older students read together with younger ones. Each pair should read together for two years. In Green School, the reading activity has been a great success. Up to now, the reading activity has lasted for five years in this school.
Both younger and older readers in this school learned a lot from this activity. For example, when they listened to each other, they learned to be kind and careful. This activity also provided them with a chance to practise skills such as getting on well with others.
The school also benefited from the reading activity—the students became closer than before. The reading buddies got closer as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the school hallway.
Now winter vacation is coming. It's a great time to get into books. Since buddy reading is useful and helpful, why not pair up with a friend, choose a book you both like and read it together?
