Recent online attention has highlighted the 24-hour food banks in Shenzhen's Futian District. These smart cabinets, looking like parcel lockers, stand as beacons of warmth in the city, providing free, fresh food day and night for those in need.
Started in May 2022, the project works with the government, companies (which donate food), social groups (which run it), and the whole community. So far, 22 smart cabinets across all 10 streets of Futian have been stocked with bread, fruits, vegetables, and other safe foods. A sweet part of the project is "veteran steamed buns": a retired soldier used his pension to make and fund them. People love these buns, which carry military traditions. Most of the food comes from 87 partners(like supermarkets and hotels), which give away extra or nearly expired(but still safe) food.
The project first helps vulnerable people: low-income families, disabled people, sanitation workers, etc. They can book food on the "iShenzhen" App before 8 p. m. After 8 p. m. , any leftover food is open to all citizens to cut waste. The cabinets keep food cool. All food sources can be tracked, and officials check them often(with insurance to keep things safe).
To encourage more companies to join, donors get tax breaks and public praise. Over the past three and a half years, the project has benefited 484,000 people and saved 195 tons of food from landfills and cut 390 tons of carbon emissions. These food banks don't just give out food—they build community connection and help the environment. In short, they show Shenzhen's creative and kind spirit, and offer a good, copyable way for cities to care for people.
