Twin giant pandas Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei arrived at the Ya'an Base of the China Conservation and Research Centre for Giant Pandas(中国大熊猫保护研究中心 CCRCGP) on 28 January 2026, the centre announced on Wednesday.
Born in June 2021 at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, Japan, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei grew up there. They are the children of Bi Li and Xian Nü. Bi Li and Xian Nü lived in Japan from 2011 to September 2024 and served as messengers of friendly exchanges between China and Japan, as well as participants in international giant panda conservation efforts.
The couple successfully gave birth to a female cub named Xiang Xiang in June 2017—who, as the elder sister of the twins, was returned to China in February 2023—followed by the birth of Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei in June 2021. Bi Li and Xian Nü returned to China earlier in September 2024 due to health reasons.
To ensure Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei's safe and smooth return, the CCRCGP made thorough preparations: experienced experts were sent to Japan in advance to cooperate with Japanese experts on the pandas' departure, and the same group of Chinese experts flew with the twins back to China. Japanese animal keepers also travelled with the pandas.
Early on Wednesday morning, the twin pandas arrived safely at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport and were later transported to the Ya'an Base. The base has made full preparations for their quarantine period, ensuring the pandas can complete their quarantine smoothly and adapt to their new home.
