I remember when I was four, I was listening to the words while my eyes were looking at details of the pictures. The two came together in my mind, creating something richer than their separate parts. Listening to stories, and then becoming a reader myself, grew into storytelling. In the Drama Club, I would read scripts, memorize lines, and bring a scene to life.
The gift of space
Around ten years ago, I finished graduate school(研究生院).

One day in the mailbox, I received a letter offering me a place in a residency programme. I thought that there must be a mistake because I wasn't a published illustrator(插画师) yet, but when I called the director, Dona Ann McAdams, to explain, she said it wasn't a mistake. The stress of city life, my worries about making a living, all of that disappeared. In its place came peace, calm, and possibility.

When I was younger, I often dreamed about growing up and living by myself because I wasn't quite sure where or how I fit in. Instead, I moved to New York City. In the city, I found the right people at the right time while working at the School of Visual Arts. A few years ago, I moved into a shared workspace.
