Jiaozi are a traditional Chinese food. Eating jiaozi is also a cultural custom during the Spring Festival. On the Chinese New Year’s Eve (除夕夜), people make jiaozi. On the first day of the Chinese New Year, family members eat jiaozi together. Some people think that without eating jiaozi, you are not celebrating the festival.
In China, zishi refers to the hours between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., and jiao means “cross”. It is said (据说) that people called the food jiaozi because they prepared it before midnight and ate it after midnight to celebrate the start of a new year.
People began to eat jiaozi about 1,800 years ago. Most Chinese can make them, and they use different fillings (馅料) — meat, vegetables, or both.
On the Chinese New Year’s Eve, families make jiaozi together. Sometimes they put sugar in a jiaozi to wish for a sweet life. They may also put a clean coin inside a jiaozi—if you find it by biting (咬) into it, you will have good luck in the coming year.
