In the Warring States Period, Shang Yang worked for the State of Qin. He wanted to make the State of Qin strong and powerful (强大的). He made new rules, but people did not believe him. He wanted to get their trust.
Shang Yang put a tall wood pole (木杆) at the south gate of the city. He told everyone, “If you carry this pole to the north gate, you will get ten pieces of gold.” Many people stood around and watched. No one moved. They all thought this was just a joke.
Shang Yang raised the reward (提高赏钱) to fifty pieces of gold. A man finally walked up. He picked up the wood pole and carried it to the north gate. Shang Yang kept his word. He gave him all the gold at once.
All the people saw this clearly. They knew Shang Yang’s new rules were true. So they followed them and the State of Qin became very strong.
This story teaches us a great lesson. Honesty is very important. When we make a promise, we must keep it.
