三、阅读理解
In ancient China, people called a man of great virtue (美德) a gentleman. The plum blossom (梅花), orchid (兰花), bamboo and chrysanthemum (菊花) are the “four gentlemen” in Chinese culture, because these plants’ natural qualities have something in common with human virtues.
The plum blossom often opens in the dead of winter. Its fine smell fills the air at one of the coldest times of the year. It stands for inner beauty and modesty (谦逊).
Usually growing in deep valleys (山谷), the orchid is famous for its light smell and elegant (优雅的) shape. It stands for elegance in Chinese people’s eyes.
The bamboo usually stands straight and upright. This quality reminds people of the word zhengzhi, which means “integrity” in Chinese. The bamboo was especially admired by many writers and artists in ancient times. For example, Su Shi once wrote in a poem, “Rather eat without meat than live without bamboo.”
The chrysanthemum blooms in late autumn when most other flowers have fallen. It symbolizes the virtue of staying strong and true to oneself even in tough conditions. So the chrysanthemum is a traditional flower widely loved by Chinese people.
