Louis Braille was born in 1809 in a small village in France. When he was three, he hurt his right eye. Later, his left eye was affected (受影响). He became totally blind at five.
Even though Louis couldn’t read or write, he was the best student in the class in the village school.

So Louis went there.
Unluckily, there were few books for blind students then. And they were printed on heavy, waxed paper (蜡纸). One sentence took up a whole page. ______ 2 ______ By the time a student got to the end of a sentence, he or she would forget the words at the beginning.
One day, a retired captain came with a system he had invented for soldiers to send messages at night. He used dots and dashes to represent (代表) different sounds. Students tried it but found it complicated (复杂的).

He spent much time learning the system and worked hard to improve it.
After two years of work, at only 15, he created a new code. It was easier to learn and quicker to read. Louis’ classmates were glad to find how well it worked. Now they could take notes in class.

Louis was very happy about that too, but he wanted to help more blind people.
In 1834, his dot alphabet was shown at the Exhibition of Industry. The French king saw Louis’ invention, but he didn’t make it the official system of reading and writing for the blind. Louis was sad but he continued to improve the dot alphabet. Even when his health grew worse, he still kept writing books and music in his dot system. In 1852, he died in Paris.
Two years later, the French government approved (批准) the dot system.

In 1878, the World Congress for the Blind voted to make Braille the system of reading and writing for all blind people worldwide. With the help of the United Nations, now Braille has been adapted to many languages around the world.
Just as the plaque (匾额) in Louis Braille’s house in his hometown says, “He opened the doors of knowledge to all those who cannot see.”
