三、阅读理解
The morning after my teacher came, she gave me a doll. When I had played with it a little while, Miss Sullivan slowly spelt into my hand the word “d-o-l-l”. I was interested in this finger play and tried to imitate (模仿) it. When I finally made the letters correctly, I was filled with pleasure and pride. In the following days, I learnt many words in this way.
One day, while I was playing with my new doll, Miss Sullivan put my big rag doll into my lap also, spelt “d-o-l-l” and tried to make me understand that “d-o-l-l” applied to both. I became impatient at her repeated attempts and, seizing the new doll, I threw it upon the floor. I felt my teacher sweep the fragments to one side of the hearth (壁炉).
Miss Sullivan didn’t blame me. Instead, she brought me my hat, and I knew I was going out into the warm sunshine. As one of my hands touched the cool stream, she spelt into the other the word “w-a-t-e-r”, first slowly, then rapidly. I stood still, my whole attention fixed upon the motions of her fingers. Suddenly I felt a misty consciousness (模糊的意识) as of something forgotten. I knew then that “w-a-t-e-r” meant the wonderful cool thing that was flowing over my hand. That living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope and joy, and set it free! There were still barriers (障碍), but they could be swept away in time.
