Ludwig van Beethoven is a world-famous composer. He wrote many great works, including Symphony No. 9 (《第九交响曲》) and “For Elise”. However, his life was full of challenges.
Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in 1770. His father was a singer and his first music teacher. But his father was very strict and often made him practise for hours in the basement (地下室). Beethoven began to show his talent at a young age. He wrote his first work when he was 11 and became a piano teacher at 12.
In 1792, Beethoven moved to Vienna to study with Joseph Haydn, a famous Austrian composer. He quickly became known for his piano skills and unique style. However, around the age of 28, he started to lose his hearing. That was a terrible blow to a musician.
Despite his hearing loss, Beethoven did not give up. He continued to compose music by “listening” to the sounds in his mind. Beethoven’s works include symphonies, concertos, sonatas (奏鸣曲) and more. His Symphony No. 5 is one of the most famous pieces of classical music. It begins with four short notes that are described as “fate knocking at the door”. His Symphony No. 9 is another masterpiece, with its famous choral finale “Ode to Joy”. In 1824, when he conducted the premiere (首次公演) of Symphony No. 9, he couldn’t hear the audience’s applause. A singer had to turn him around to see the cheering crowd.
Beethoven died in 1827, but his music lives on. His works inspire people around the world with their power and emotion. As he once said, “I will take fate by the throat; it shall not bend me completely to its will.”
