One day, somebody sent Cao Cao an elephant. Cao Cao asked his officials(官员）and his son, Cao Chong, to see it.
The elephant was tall and huge. It was heavy. “How heavy is it?” Cao Cao asked his officials. One of them suggested making huge scales(秤）to weigh the elephant.
Another man said that they could cut the elephant into small pieces, weigh the pieces one at a time and add up the weight.
Cao Chong said loudly, “I know how to weigh the elephant!” But everyone laughed at him.
Cao Chong told his father that he could weigh the elephant if he had a big boat and a lot of stones.
People led the elephant down into the boat. Cao Chong marked the waterline(吃水线).
Then people drove the elephant onto the bank and put stones into the boat until the water came up to the same line. People weighed the stones. In this way, Cao Chong weighed the elephant.
