The unforgettable Frida Kahlo
In November 2025, Frida Kahlo’s painting, The Dream (The Bed), was sold in New York for 54.7 million. This became the most expensive piece of art by a female artist. It also showed how important Kahlo remains in modern culture. But why has Kahlo become such an unforgettable figure?
Kahlo was born in Mexico in 1907. When she was six, she got polio (小儿麻痹症) and that left her right leg shorter and weaker than her left one. Then, at the age of 18, she was badly injured in a bus accident. This caused her years of great pain and many medical problems that stayed with her until her death in 1954.
Because of her poor health, Kahlo often had to stay in bed and could not follow her dream of becoming a doctor. During her recovery, she started painting and later became an artist. In 1928, she showed the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera her paintings. Rivera became a big fan of her work and married her a year later. He encouraged her to show her paintings to others. However, Kahlo did not gain wider recognition until 1939, when the Louvre Museum in Paris bought one of her paintings.
Kahlo loved to include Mexican folk art and bright colours in her work, and some of her paintings contain fantasy elements. About a third of her paintings are self-portraits. She shows the world her loneliness and pain in these works. Her paintings also speak honestly about feelings we can all understand. This is perhaps why Kahlo is remembered not only as a great artist, but also as a woman who turned her pain into powerful art.
