West meets East in art
Art has always travelled across borders. In the modern age, many Western artists looked to the East for new ways to see and create art. Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso are two famous examples.
Vincent van Gogh
In the 19th century, Japanese woodblock prints began flooding the European market. They became very popular. Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh became interested in Japanese woodblock prints after he moved to Paris in 1886. At first, he studied and copied some of them. Later, he began using them for inspiration. He loved their bold lines, bright colours and unusual use of space. We can see this influence in oil paintings such as Almond Blossom and The Bedroom.
Pablo Picasso
In 1956, Chinese painter Zhang Daqian met Pablo Picasso in France. Zhang was surprised when Picasso showed him notebooks with many Chinese-style ink drawings of his own. Picasso had long admired Qi Baishi’s artwork. According to a well-known story, when Zhang invited him to China, Picasso replied that he could not go because China already had Qi. He admired Qi’s clean, simple lines and lively brushwork. Picasso also found inspiration in the Chinese idea that an artist should not copy nature but should work like nature. In his later years, Picasso continued to explore ink drawing. Some good examples are a series of bullfighting scenes he painted in 1960.

答案:1.b 2.a 3.b 4.a 5.c
解析:
