(D) Read these adapted excerpts from The Little Prince where he meets men on different planets. Match each man to his weakness. Write the numbers in the blanks.
Excerpt One
“Do you admire me?” the man asked the Little Prince.
“What does that mean, ‘admire’?”
“To admire means that you think I am the handsomest, the best-dressed, the richest, and the smartest man on this planet.”
“But you are the only man on your planet!”
“Admire me just the same.”
Excerpt Two
“I own the stars,” said the man.
“If I owned a flower,” the Little Prince said, “I could pick it. But you cannot pick the stars from heaven ...”
“No. But I can put them in the bank. That means that I write the number of my stars on a piece of paper. And then I put this paper in a drawer and lock it with a key.”
Excerpt Three
“Why have you just put out the street lamp?”
“Those are the orders,” replied the man.
“What are the orders?”
“The orders are that I put out my lamp.”
And he lit his lamp again.
“But why have you just lit it again?”
“Those are the orders,” replied the man.
“I do not understand,” said the Little Prince.
“There is nothing to understand,” said the man. “Orders are orders.” And he put out his lamp.
Excerpt Four
“I am a geographer. A geographer knows where all the seas, rivers, towns, mountains and deserts are.”
“Has your planet any oceans?”
“I couldn’t tell you,” said the geographer.
“Ah! Has it any mountains?”
“I couldn’t tell you,” said the geographer.
“And towns, and rivers, and deserts?”
“I couldn’t tell you that, either.”
“But you are a geographer!”
“But I am not an explorer.”
