American actor Marc Herrmann says he is finally able to call himself a full-time working actor thanks to Chinese micro dramas(短剧). He is one of many Hollywood workers getting new chances. Chinese micro drama apps are becoming popular in America and changing the world's streaming(流媒体)market.
Behind the fast growth is the fact that China's micro drama industry has developed a complete ecosystem in film and TV with its "short, fast, and catchy" features. According to official data, China's micro drama market reached over 100 billion yuan in 2025, and its overseas(海外)revenue has been growing rapidly. The success of Chinese micro dramas overseas is not about spreading Chinese works, but about localized(本土化)creation in themes and visual styles for the overseas market.
Xu Wensong, a senior professor at the School of Cultural Industry Management at the Communication University of China, told us that Chinese micro dramas are characterized by attractive story lines, an ability to provide high emotional(情感的)value and quick fun. With improving production quality, these micro dramas hold certain advantages(优势)in international markets. "Chinese platforms are good at fitting local tastes," Xu said.
Micro drama production has changed the traditional rules of the film and television industry. A Hollywood film editor said that an increasing number of micro dramas supported by Chinese companies, developed by Chinese creative teams, and starring Hollywood actors are being produced in Los Angeles. This, he said, has "
rescued" many Hollywood workers who were close to losing their jobs.
Sun Jiashan, a senior researcher at the Central Academy of Culture and Tourism Administration, noted that the overseas development of Chinese micro dramas is the symbol of an important practice of "cultural output(输出)in the digital age". Sun believes that micro dramas may become an important tool for China's cultural soft power, carving out a different path in the world's streaming competition.
