I come from a medical family. My grandparents and parents are all traditional Chinese doctors. When I was young, my grandparents often told me stories about some great traditional Chinese doctors
Zhang Zhongjing and Sun Simiao. I knew about the story of Li Shizhen from my grandfather.
Born in Hubei Province in 1518, Li Shizhen was a great medical expert. He is
known as “the Saint(圣人)of Medicine” in Chinese history. His work, Compendium of Materia Medica(《本草纲目》), is one of the best medical books. The medical
in the book is still valuable even now.
When Li Shizhen was young, he was interested in traditional Chinese medicine and began to read medical books. However, he found many

to his decision to write a new medical book. Li Shizhen travelled everywhere to
herbs(药草)and do research. He also talked with many farmers, doctors and patients to get the correct information about the herbs. He even tasted the herbs
and almost lost his life many times. Li Shizhen finally
the information of over 1,890 herbs and he
recorded it in his book Compendium of Materia Medica. It took Li Shizhen about forty years to finish the book. He died
the age of 75. It was a great loss for people at that time.
“Li Shizhen believed the most important thing in his life was to cure people's illnesses. This is doctors'
