Seventeen-year-old Guo Pu stood on the podium (领奖台) in Fukuoka (福冈), Japan, her heart racing as the crowd cheered. She had just won gold in women's breaking at the 2025 World DanceSport Federation World Breaking Championships (2025 世界霹雳舞锦标赛). Her victory made history as China's first-ever World Championship gold in the event. As China's national anthem played, tears filled her eyes. Guo was China's only competitor in the women's field and faced top Japanese breakers round after round. In the quarterfinals, she narrowly edged past (险胜) Japan's Ayane Nakarai by a 2—1 score. Her journey to the world stage began long before this victory. Born in Linyi, Shandong Province, Guo studied piano and traditional Chinese dance as a child. Her coach first noticed her talent during a local performance. "He said there was a spark in my eyes," she recalled. Encouraged by him, she began learning street dance.
Now 17, Guo has trained for nearly ten years. She practises up to eight hours a day, blending strength, speed, and rhythm. "I've had low points," she said. "But I never gave up." She has learned to rest when needed and then return stronger.
Looking ahead, Guo hopes to inspire young dancers and aims for gold at the following games. "If you choose something you truly love, stick to it.
Perseverance pays off," she said.
