叶 脉 绣
The beautiful handiwork of leaf-vein embroidery(叶脉绣)in Tongren,Guizhou Province, has made Guizhou embroidery famous in China.
Leaf-vein embroidery dates back to the Song Dynasty. It has been used to send information by several ethnic groups(民族)in the southwestern region.
Yang Li,an inheritor(继承人)of this skill, has brought together the traditional embroidery of the Miao,Tujia and Dong ethnic groups in the leaves, mixing traditional beauty with modern skill.
Leaf-vein embroidery artwork is highly valued because it is difficult to make. The key steps include picking and drying the leaves, then designing(设计)and embroidering the pattern(图案). Leaves from plants in the thick forests of the Fanjing Mountain area in Tongren provide the best material. After the leaves naturally soften in about 20 days, they are fumigated(熏蒸). Then patterns, with ideas from ancient stories and nature, are drawn on the veins.
However, because leaf-vein embroidery needs long and hard work,it is not very easy to keep this traditional skill alive.
“During my lifetime,I feel I have the duty to pass down this skill,” Yang said. In 2022,Yang set up a training centre and has since shared leaf-vein embroidery through short videos with her student Yang Xinyu.
“Leaf-vein embroidery is a treasure. As a young person influenced(影响)by my teacher Yang Li,I have kept on learning this skill and hope that more young people will return to their hometowns to inherit this skill,” Yang Xinyu said.
