Lu Xun's real name is Zhou Shuren. He was born on 25 September 1881. The year 2021 was the 140th anniversary of his birth. People around China remembered and talked about this great writer.

And he went to study in a Japanese college. However, Lu Xun later found that there were many problems in Chinese society. The minds of the Chinese people were numb (麻木的). Most Chinese were just followers without thinking. So he gave up medical studies and started writing. He hoped his words could inspire people. “He changed his dream to save the country. This encouraged me a lot,” said Zhao Zhihan, 13, from Beijing. “When we make choices, we should think about what they are for.”
A warrior-writer
Some people said Lu’s words are like weapons. The famous writer Lin Yutang called him a “warrior”.

For example, in the short story “A Madman’s Diary”, the madman sees a “man-eating” society. Another short story, “Kong Yiji”, is about a man who fails the imperial exam (科举考试) and can’t live a normal life.

“Reading one story by him is more useful than reading many by others. His care for society and his sharp words are so different,” a reader told the press.
A reformer of writing
Lu Xun is called the “Father of Modern Chinese Literature”.

What’s more, he wrote “A Madman’s Diary” in spoken language. It is said to be a “first” in the history of modern Chinese literature. Before the work, much formal writing was in the wenyanwen style. That style is hard to read for someone without training.
