At a very young age, Patty Wilson was told by her doctor that she was an epileptic (癫痫患者). One day, she said to her father, a morning jogger, with a smile, “Daddy, I’d love to run with you, but I’m scared that I might have a seizure (发作).” Her father replied, “If you do, I know how to help you. So let’s run!”
That’s just what they did every day. It was a wonderful experience for them to share and there were no seizures at all while she was running. After a few weeks, she told her father that she would like to set some big goals for the future.
Her father was happy to hear that. And with his help, Patty made her plans. As a freshman (高一学生) in high school, she announced, “I’m going to run from Orange County up to San Francisco.” (A distance of about 400 miles.) “As a sophomore (高二学生),” she went on, “I’m going to run to Portland, Oregon.” (about 1,000 miles.) “As a junior (高三学生), I’ll run to St. Louis.” (About 2,000 miles.) “As a senior (高中四年级学生), I’ll run to Washington, D. C.” (About 2,700 miles away.)
Patty was positive and looked at the handicap of being an epileptic as simply “an inconvenience”. She focused not on what she had lost, but on what she had left.
That year Patty completed her run to San Francisco. Her dad ran every mile at her side, and her mum, a nurse, followed in a motor home (房车) behind them in case anything went wrong.
In her sophomore year, Patty’s classmates got behind her. They built a giant poster that read, “Run, Patty, Run!” On her second long run, she broke a bone in her foot. Patty chose to wrap (包扎) it instead of having an operation. She finished the run to Portland, jogging the last mile on her 17th birthday.
Patty kept practising and finished her third run. In her senior year, after running nearly every day for four months from the West Coast to the East Coast, Patty arrived in Washington, D. C. She really made it!
