As legend has it, during the time of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors (三皇五帝), there was a big problem with the Yellow River. The river flooded and there was water everywhere. Many people lost their homes. Gun (鲧), father of Yu the Great (大禹), was ordered by Emperor Yao to control the flood. Gun tried his best and built many dams to block the flood, but the water was too powerful. Gun’s method didn’t work.
During the time of Emperor Shun, the task of controlling the flood fell to Yu the Great. Yu led a group of assistants (助手) to complete this task. They overcame hardships and travelled through mountains and rivers all over the Central Plains. Along the way, he saw countless people struggling in the flood. However, when needed, the people would try their best to support him, whether they knew him or not. Their determination (决心) increased Yu’s confidence. He learnt from his father’s lesson and invented a new method. Whenever a project started, he would work with the people, eating and sleeping with them on site (在现场). They dug mountains and moved stones, working day and night. Yu was away from home for thirteen years. Three times, he passed by his home without going into the house. He thought it was more important to help the people. Finally, after thirteen years of hard work, Yu the Great succeeded! The flood was controlled and the water flowed back to where it should be. People could return to their homes and plant crops again. They were very happy and loved Yu the Great very much.
