When a strong earthquake hit Dingri County in Xizang on 7 Jan 2025, Dekyi Drolma, a 21-year-old Tibetan woman, quickly jumped into action. Using social media, she called on friends and reached out to Tibetan student groups across China. Within days, she helped raise around 140,000 yuan to buy emergency supplies (物资). She then travelled with friends to send the goods to some of the hardest-hit villages.
Dekyi Drolma was then a student at Nanjing University, one of China’s top universities. She was born in a small village in Xizang. At age 14, she left home to study in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, far away from her family. Even at that young age, she felt a sense of duty to others. During summer and winter holidays, she went back to her hometown and began teaching children in a borrowed room. Some parents wanted to pay her, but she only took a little money. For poor families, she asked for nothing.
To live away from home was far from easy. At first, she struggled with the distance from her family and the new environment. “I felt
isolated,” she recalled. “Not just because I was far from home, but also because I was lost when it came to connecting with others.” But over time, she learnt to adapt, communicate and form meaningful friendships. Her experience made her stronger and shaped how she sees the world.
Now, she is running a business in Xizang. She wants to serve her hometown. “Whatever I do,” she said, “I want it to create value—not just for myself, but for others.”
