Mi Zhou, a disabled clay artist who sets up a street stall(小摊) by Nanqiao in Dujiangyan, Chengdu, has become famous all over China. In 2003, when he was only 21 years old, he had a serious high-voltage electric accident, which made doctors cut off both of his hands. After resting at home for one year, though he could only move his arms, he refused to give up and learned to eat and put on clothes by himself.
As he got married and had three kids to raise, he knew he had to find a skill to support his whole family. In 2007, when he saw an artist making lovely clay figures on the street, he fell in love with this art and hoped to learn it. At first, the artist refused because he thought it was impossible for a man without hands to do such fine work. However, since Mi endlessly visited the artist to ask for lessons, the artist was greatly touched and finally agreed to teach him clay art.
It was really a hard task for Mi to master this skill. No matter how difficult it was, he never stopped learning. As years went by, he created special ways that fitted him well. He changed the clay material and mainly made cute cartoon characters. After more than ten years of practice, he can finish one clay figure in just seven minutes and make about 30 works every day.
Now Mi not only makes money to support his family as he once wished, but takes great pleasure in creating clay works. Whenever he sits by the river to make clay pieces, lots of visitors will stop to watch him. He firmly believes that all his efforts will bring good results one day.
