The writing task was posted on the blackboard for my ninth-grade students: “What is the perfect age in your heart, and why would you like to be that age?” I hoped this writing task would help them think about their life goals. I could tell by their expressions that maybe this would work. After I collected their papers, the children also waited excitedly for me to read their thoughts.
Hilda wished to reach my age. She said she would like to be a ninth-grade teacher and share warm happy moments, have fun with her students just like I do every day. I was glad my daily work with the kids impressed her so much.
Most students dreamed of being 25 to 28. They believed people could achieve great success at this stage. Some of them hoped to be football players, play for well-known clubs and compete around the world. Jorge planned to earn money to buy his mom a new house with a bedroom for each member of the family. That would be eight bedrooms!
But I always remember Victoria’s story. Quiet and full of ideas, she spent ten minutes thinking carefully before writing lines that I still keep in mind. She held the view that all ages are perfect. Life arranges different stages for us to taste unique experiences: the first day in kindergarten, life-long friendships, college graduation, a satisfying job, raising kids and travelling after retirement (退休). Every period of life carries its own value.
