In 2026, Wang Hong became one of the first mathematicians from China and the third female(女性的)mathematician in the world to win the Fields Medal, also known as the Nobel Prize of Mathematics. It is given every four years to young mathematicians under 40 years old around the world. Wang received the award with her university classmate Deng Yu at the International Congress of Mathematicians.
Wang Hong was born in 1991 in Guilin, Guangxi. She showed great interest in learning from an early age. At 16, she entered Peking University, where she first studied earth science before changing her major to mathematics. However, her journey was not always easy. Surrounded by many excellent classmates, she sometimes doubted herself. She even spent half a year learning architecture(建筑学)before finally returning to mathematics.
After university, she studied in France and the United States. In 2019, she received her PhD in mathematics from MIT. Her greatest achievement was
proving the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture(三维挂谷猜想), a famous maths problem that mathematicians believed might be true but could not prove for more than 100 years. Together with Joshua Zahl, she developed a new method and finally proved it. Her work has helped mathematicians and scientists explore other difficult problems in mathematics and physics.
Although Wang Hong is a famous mathematician, she has a balanced lifestyle. She believes that people cannot learn well by forcing themselves to study all the time. She once said, “Rest when you feel tired; study when you have energy.” She exercises regularly and takes breaks when facing difficult problems.
After Wang Hong won the Fields Medal, many people on social media shared their excitement. They congratulated Hong Wang on her great achievement and felt proud to see Chinese mathematicians shining on the world stage of mathematics.
